Should I play or S/M or Ultra S/M?

I've just gotten back into Pokémon and picked up where I left off many years ago by playing Omega Ruby.
I just finished Omega Ruby and am looking to play Sun/Moon. However, I'm confused about which one to play.

Is Ultra S/M similar to Emerald/Platinum in the sense that they are the superior versions to play over S/M? Or, are they more akin to B2/W2 where they are sequels?

They are an improved S&M in almost every way, and honestly if you haven't played Alola the ultra version is probably the better option. Mina actually gets a trial for example.
The plot isn't as good, given you don't get the best version of Lusamine or Lillie's storyline, but it's not some nonsense that actively hurts the experience.
Hope you like reading, and interacting with npcs as that's how you get most out of the experience.

USUM has better everything except the story, which believe it or not is an arguable deal breaker for some people with this specific entry. I do understand that too since I don't think there's any character in a mainline game that I got more invested in than Lillie. Even so, it's quite understandable to skip to USUM if you just want a fuller gameplay experience.

I'm just looking to casually playthrough the story/campaign. If S/M has a better version of the campaign then I'll probably just play S/M in that case.
However, after finishing the game, I may run through Ultra S/M, if I like it a lot.

i think SM is better than USUM purely because the narrative is so much stronger, for all USUM added it gutted the part of the game most crucial to it making any sense as a coherent story.

I forgot, does vanilla S&M also have all the little events USUM have? They really help flesh out the region more.
Makes Ather's reveal to be the real evil team more impactful since you do see them actually caring for pokemon and you help them on occasion even after that intro cutscene.

USUM is objectively better including the story

it does have a few but it certainly doesn't have near as many as USUM, and it's also missing a lot of the character development scenes they added for hau and gladion; it's just that SM has the stronger writing for lillie and lusamine

The Alola games are terrible for replays thanks to how the story is presented and the unskippable cutscenes. I played both SM & USUM at the time of their respective releases and struggled to complete USUM thanks to the "Ultra Changes".

Yeah, staggering playthroughs is for the best.
They're also not very speedrunner friendly. They're definitely meant to be played at a slower pace.

If USUM really is that much better than S&M, it's probably best to play S&M first since it might make them harder to go back to.
Kinda how if you play Rune Factory games, if you play a subsequent entry going back to past titles is a real chore and takes away from enjoyment. Unless you really like Runeys I guess.

meh, they're not really all that different. it's just minor stuff. I think your comparison is more what it's like hopping between different generations. what makes playing SM & USUM back to forth difficult, in either order, is just sitting through all the cutscenes again. it's really tedious
