You say that but the Unova starters themselves got practically no shilling at all until recently with Oshawott/Hisuian Samurott and all of a sudden people seem to mysteriously love them now (though Japan always loved Piplup 2.0).
Unova didn't really shill any of its mons super hard except for Zoroark which they fucked up in nearly every way possible, it's a sad truth that shilling is almost always the deciding factor in a mon's popularity.

honestly i like that. unova's isn't the most popular roster but the fans it does have are more organic. and there's a chance for any mon to rise to the top instead of a few obvious shill targets.
i mean, just look at the top results for that pokemon of the year poll. two starters, an eeveelution, a legendary, two shillmons, whatever dragapult is. and a chandelier. it's unique. i find it really charming.
unova is the land of equal opportunity, is what i'm trying to say.

I love Gen 5's pokedex but I think its starters are the weakest part. IMO it would be a near perfect pokedex if you swapped the gen 5 starters with the gen 6 starters. I think the gen 6 pokedex is mostly shit besides its starters which have great designs, and diancie.

People love the Sinnoh starters due to Game Freak making Infenape broken, shilling Piplup like crazy, and actually letting them shine in the anime and spin-offs like Pokken. Meanwhile Johto's starters are by far the most neglected trio even more neglected than Unova's and were intentionally designed to be background fodder as to not overshadow the KANTOOO starters (Typhlosion wasn't even allowed in the Johto anime), and even they are less hated the the Unova starters. I don't know what exactly went wrong with Unovas starters since I personally think they're solid designwise and think Emboar's in particular is overhated for stupid reasons.
Part of me wants to say its leftover resentment from Genwunners malding over Unova not having Kanto Pokemon but that can't be or else Chanduleure would be hated to, so the issue has to be with the Unova starters themselves.

Nah I get it, in a perfect world that's how it should be, but shilling just works as we've seen time and time again. Even Pansage was popular for a while overseas just because Cilan had one in the anime.
I will say though that Chandelure gets the Ghost buff, five of the eight top mons in that POTY where either Ghost or Dark type and they pretty consistently give those two types to their shillmons. Waiting for the day they give a Normal type some time in the sun.

I think Snivy is fine off, just give Oshawott a final evolution that resembles Dewott and redesign the Tepig line. Pigs are a tougher sell to normalfags and the Tepig line had to struggle with not only cluttered designs, but being the comically ridiculous third fire/fighting type starter in a row. I feel like if they went the Decidueye route and said "fuck it, meta second type" like dark it would have been at least somewhat better received. Beside them though I feel like unova's only other low points are the monkies and excessive legendaries, surprisingly good dex for how large it was.

Normal is weird since genuinely the best representatives of the type are kantomon. Normal's neutrality against everything felt more distinct back then and normal as a type has been left in the dust by several other types. The type has got the most attention it's had in a long time thanks to Ursaluna honestly, type needs more representatives that bypass powercreep.

There's 9 in total. This is about as many as Generation 3(8) and 4(9) had. Generations 7, 8, and 9 all introduced 11 each. How is Generation 5's legendary count excessive? Just feels proportionally more than the others?

I REALLY don't think you should. None of them have the 600+ BST that legendaries have, and on top of that, they're heavily implied to otherwise be completely normal to the realms they're from.

The addition of genies, Keldeo, and Meloetta feels excessive. Legendaries have felt excessive since gen 4, arguably gen 3 even, but in gen 5 they feel actually absurd. Gens should really just stick to the template.

I don't see this said enough, I completely agree.
When a huge chunk of the dex is "legendary" they don't feel special at all. Alola was particularly bad about this. (Gens past 7 can do whatever they want, I'm not playing that shit)

I would say it started as far back as the Latis in gen 3 but it's a problem that only got strictly worse as the series progressed. I can't really understand GF's angle with this decision either. Is it for marketing reasons like having a new pokemon to revolve a film around or slap on the next TCG booster art? Is it intended to appeal to compfags by being new mon to "shake up the meta"? I don't see it ever getting better but at the least I pray we can avoid more Volcanion or Calyrex tier designs, I don't hate a lot of pokemon but these are really among the ugliest things put into the dex.

Genies would be annoying on their own but they really have just about everything stacked against them.

I'm playing through BW, and it's pretty dull and hand holdy so far. Knocked out a level 10ish mon with a level 3 early rout dog and it went up to level 9. Kinda shocked me.
I just rescued the shitmon for Bianca, it gets better right?
