It's pay to win and not even funny play to win, just pure pay to win. Also it should be able to be played on PC and other consoles but the Pokemon franchise has so many greedy hands in the pot.
I find Unite to be fun but I only play it once maybe every three months. If they got rid of the egregious PTW aspects (which funnily enough they did in the beginning but it's still so bad) and made it more accessible for other platforms it could be popular

The held items are still P2W. Especially if you're new and just getting into it, the amount of grinding you need to get even a fraction of the held items to lvl50 or whatever is crazy. And these held items are important, completely changes the game. I mean if we're comparing to other successful MOBAs like LoL then it's obvious Unite has a P2W problem. The items are only necessary if you're going into higher level competitive. If you just want to play the game, you can go into it with no items, no upgrades, no emblems, and a limited roster and still find success. The matchmaking is so fucked that people with a 41% WR are alongside the ladder with people who carry.

Unite is casual to the max and the people who still think the items are P2W are not very good to understand micro and macro to begin with, so items wouldn't help even if they had them. If you're talking about broken characters, that's just standard MOBA who either releases an underpowered character or overpowered, rarely do they hit the balance on the first try. TTar is broken right now but he's also been out for over a year and you can't really call him pay to win anymore if you can get him with currency you earn in-game.

Yall honestly think that locking away held items that can be used in game isn't P2W? And this is reason number quadrillion that the game is failing because people like them that are content with being fucked over by dirty corporate greed.
Competitiveness creates a long term interest in a game which then allows casual gamers to want to try it out.

Sorry but you can't have a "casual" P2W MOBA. It's not a thing

The items don't make or break most fights. For every one instance where Aeos Cookie made a difference in you living a fight, there are ten instances where it's impact was only slightly felt in the game. Getting Muscle Band upgraded to level 20 doesn't mean you're going to start winning more. It just means you can properly maximize your character's potential if you already understand them to begin with. These differences are in the single-digit percentages, they are not consistent game-changers. Being fully stacked with Attack Weight isn't going to make a bad player become suddenly good-- they're still going to divebomb into the enemy team on their pad and backcap during Ray. It only helps good players perform slightly better.

The only time I felt like Unite was objectively P2W was Mewtwo's release where NOT having one on your team but the other did = your team just loses. It was worse because it went on for three months. Three months where you HAVE to have a Mewtwo Y and he HAS to outperform the other one in order to win. Nothing else has ever compared to that. Even annoying releases like Greedent or Tsareena were not that busted.

That's the same concept for ALL MOBAs. Items only give a small percentage boost to the player but in a competitive arena even a small advantage can lead to a victory or a lost.
And MOBAs with no competitive stage will always be dead.
