No, it started being a thing in gen 7. The main antagonist group ends up being someone other than the main evil team of the region.

It's mostly impossible as everything happens off screen or for nonsense reasons in SWSH
They're supposed to represent a toxic fanbase, so maybe they could spread lies about you online causing people to mistrust you, or cause trouble for you before important fights. You would have a time limit to defeat them or you miss the battle.
I find it interesting though they have the same color scheme as Eternatus.

Usually in older gens the grunts would be goofy but the higher ups serious. But there would always be some psycho mixed in. I think the problem in newer gens is more like all the grunts of evil teams act the same.

On one hand, making the game's evil team be just a bunch of irrelevant hoolibongs was kinda funny. But on the other hand, they were only there because GF feels obligated to have a team every game, so why bother?
