It's purely patternfagging based entirely on PLA and the website not showing any abilities for the Pokemon described. In truth, we still know nothing of the game to say for absolute certain, because we haven't yet gotten clear footage of the stats screen(s).
It's a weird thing to patternfag about though, because LZA is nothing at all like PLA. No Strong/Agile Fighting Styles, using a real-time battle system instead of turn-based, way more emphasis on trainers compared to PLA's minimal focus on trainers, and LZA takes place in modern day, whereas PLA took place roughly 100 years ago.

Well given it's been treated exactly the same as L: A (its own separate release, set apart from VGC), the odds they continue to go non-standard, given the non-standard battle system seems all the more likely.
I will say abilities weren't needed in L: A and likely won't be that important to L: Z-A's system. And with Champions incoming, they won't need to add them to Gen 10, outside an "every gimmick returns" angle, as they'll be useable in the Game Freak battle engine anyway. Can you fuckers not just take whatever they're cooking and accept it? If abilities are in or not, they're not telling us yet anyway and it's not as if they're suddenly going to move VGC to L: Z-A just for one year to let you keks use competitive megas for the first time ('cause none you keks were playing Online back in the day).

We won't know until we get the stats screen that shows the Pokemon's ability, or they explicitly show footage of an ability activating.
They're carefully and deliberately creating scenarios where you could argue for either way, leaving crumbs of evidence to imply "yeah, this game has abilities" but also not showing any hard proof that could say "nope, no abilities again."
It's the same level of "maybe, maybe not" as Mega Kangaskhan having Power-Up Punch in its movepool but not using it in the snippet of footage it appears in.

If the games didn't have abilities, they would have explicitly said so from the very start instead of leaving it up in the air so people can speculate, just like how they made it explicitly clear early into LGPE's marketing that only the original 151 Pokemon + Meltan and Melmetal will be available.
You fail to understand this. GameFreak and TPC know what they're fucking doing, because speculation over abilities returning or not drums up free marketing for LZA, and keeps it fresh in people's minds while GF and TPC wait for May-June to start whipping out reveals for one of the 26 new Mega Evolutions every so often until the game releases in November.

They're non-essential to LGPE, PLA and LZA.
That's three games on the Switch, and then abilities only appear in SWSH and SV, two games on Switch compared to the three that DON'T have abilities.
BDSP obviously need not apply because it's a remake, and it would be unfaithful if a mechanic that was originally present in DP didn't reappear in BDSP.
So all and all, Abilities are becoming a non-essential mechanic to the franchise.
Abilities also don't exist in GO, the most popular Pokemon game of all time, which has very obviously influenced GameFreak's own perception on what's essential and what's nonessential in Pokemon.

They were already fulfilling this by dripfeeding the ability to transfer old mons into new games, slowly building up to the point where as of LZA, you can now have all 1000+ Pokemon be usable across Switch era Pokemon, which counts as allowing you to use your HOME collection.
Thus, Champions existing is pure cannibalization retardation that detracts sales from Nintendo platforms and paid games, because if you don't need them to play Champions, all you have to do is get a Discord bot to injects mons, trade them into your Home storage, and play ball, and you might as well, right? You have no one to blame but yourself for asking a question about abilities in a pre-release game that leans towards them being absent, but still leaves behind bread crumbs of "MAYBE they're in... teehee, buy the game and find out! ;)" to spark discussion, which is free marketing for the game that also keeps it relevant in the public conscience until they're ready to advertise the new Mega Evolutions in a few months time.

I'll also point out Ash's final battle had Leon calling on the organisers to allow Ash to use ALL his gimmicks in one battle - Mega Lucario, Gigantamax Gengar, 10M volt Thunderbolt from Pikachu and even a bonus Gmax Pikachu, when Eternatus appeared and charged Ash and Leon's Dynamax Bands a 2nd time. The writing's on the wall, you're going to face all gimmicks because they work closely with the anime, or didn't you see the leaks?

desu adding new mega evolutions in a game with no abilities is a weird choice
i feel like a lot of what gave the prior megas identities were their abilities. like mega pidgeot being able to spam hurricanes with 100% accuracy, or lopunny gaining the ability to fuck up ghosts.
in this case won't it just be a big stat dump?

Glorified stat dump, yeah. But it's clear they're setting things up so that LZA save data is vital for getting the new Megas elsewhere so they can make the derivative game "technically mandatory" to survive in early PVP, like how Hisui mons dominated early SV.
LZA Megas in Gen 10 in some shape or form? Stones won't be obtainable without that save data, or trading with someone who's willing to give up their own Mega Stones, which is a hard sell because they've consistently been one-per-save since debut.
LZA Megas in Champions? You gotta make sure your Champions profile is linked to a Home profile that has those Pokemon registered from an LZA origin point, most likely.
