>no long unskippable cutscenes
>no endless tutorials
>you’ll be catching mons within five minutes of starting a new game
>decent variety of types before the first gym (lets you experiment
>even with animations on, encounters and battles don’t feel slow
>since there’s no shinies, you don’t feel trepidatious about staring the game over
>all the pokemon feel iconic even if not all of them are useful
>the presence of gambling makes the game not feel like it’s for literal babies
>the lack of abilities, natures, egg moves, weather, terrains, etc. makes the gameplay a lot more straightforward: all that matters is types and stats
Now that’s not to say that gen 1 is perfect. I wish you could get more than one eevee on a single playthrough, I don’t like how so many pokemon get barely any moves (and the relative scarcity of TMs), and some of the Red/Blue sprites look hideous (especially geodude, golbat, and exeggcute (it’s for this reason why I actually prefer Yellow (though some pokemon, like magikarp and grimer, have a sprite downgrade from Red/Blue))).
This is coming from someone who didn’t play pokemon growing up but, as an adult, has played at least one mainline game from every generation to completion. The second-best generation, in terms of raw fun, is gen 3 (both RSE and FRLG).
