If people really weren't paying attention and noticed the NatDex was gone in SM, then they should have expected that to be the future of the franchise. And wouldn't you know it, it was. The ship of theseus was years ago and started in RS when Regional Dexes were introduced and replaced the full NatDex. They kept NatDex around as an option, but it was never the default, just an option. You never were going to get a NatDex to fill up until post-game after RS. Most games after RS were completely incapable of filling up the NatDex without needing new games that would come out afterward to do so. By BW, the NatDex was completely incapable of being filled with the current generation of games
If you were paying attention, Dexit was genuinely inevitable. Especially with the "let's introduce 100 new Pokemon every 3 years!" cycle
