I'm sad that I missed out on Pokemania because I wasn't born in time. It seems like a much more fun and soulful time within the Pokemon community.

Even if you weren't on forums, there were plenty of official websites and portals. PokemonStadium.com used to update with a new team of the day. It became a computer class ritual, even at the tail end of Pokemania a bunch of us kids would check the Stadium 2 site and talk team composition, even though it didn't amount to much more than "Wow Tyranitar is so cool"

It was the worst thing that possibly could have happened to Pokemon. All the slop GF releases nowadays to rave reviews and huge sales are the direct consequence of Pokemania making it so they never had to compete or try. (See also: Madden once EA got the exclusive NFL rights and no longer had to worry about 2K or GameDay.)

If you were a kid with little to no friends, having some Pokemon cards made you a popular kid, or at least a kid who didn't picked on. I had some bubblegum one day at summer camp and I was the star of the group for THAT one day. The anime was huge and anyone could get a toy or two, official or bootleg, it didn't matter. Anytime we traded cards, we put them over the sun to see if they were fakes. By the time the online groups started showing up, I was already out of collecting the cards but still watched the anime. I didn't get back into the games until Gen IV. Adults at the time thought it was stupid, whatever arguments you hear about Gen III-onwards with the designs, that was already happening with Gen I among adults who weren't on in it.

The big one that gets me is when people cry about Pokemon becoming 'diverse', when it was already like that if you went to any of the toy stores that had a Pokemon sections and they ALL had a Pokemon section, kids of all races were grabbing toys, plushes, games and so on. TPC only recently realized the adults buying the merch were the kids who helped get Pokemon to where it is now and the human characters represent said fanbase. Once you go global and become a corporation, you tend to look at your demographics and some suits in HR and PR will take note of that. Treating Pokemon like a niche shonen anime that didn't air on Toonami is fucking stupid, The gate was left open even when Pokemania died, it was just a matter of who wanted to stick around.

For 8 weeks, November and December of 1999, Burger King would host event nights promoting the First Movie. It was a relaxed space, seems to have been supervised by volunteers but to a child it just felt like a pokemon-themed recess, daycare, scouts sort of thing. It was a good experience for a kid, really easy to feel like you and all the other kids around you have something in common. The Go craze in 2016 is the closest we have gotten to this since, but I think we're due for another big shift. Maybe next year for the 30th anniversary.

Two gameboys and a link cable created more community than an entire discord groom server.
The TCG was massive without any youtuber hyping the next set, and kids traded holo for holo, without checking market price and trending graphs.
We organized school trips to go watch the movies.
