The old 4chan was also just a product of the internet at the time, even the other meme sites like newgrounds and ebaums had a very different culture than modern internet. It's not 4chan that changed, 4chan was always a contrarian and retarded reflection of the rest of the internet. That hasn't changed, it's just that the rest of the internet got more retarded and less savvy which is directly reflected here. 4chan was only more wild because you could get away with more here. Ironically you can now get away with more on Twitter and reddit than you can on most the boards here.
