the one year war was not vietnam! it wasn't even world war ii. it was like fifty world war IIs put together all at once. there is absolutely no way that kind of insubordination would ever be tolerated in a conventional conflict of that nature. if you're fighting the viet cong and your officer expects you to salute or some shit then you dont do it because it's a great way to get your commanding officer shot. if you're at normandy you don't disobey orders because it is literally just massing people against people.
in the original 0079 bright is like 19, and it's a point of the series that amuro has to fucking learn to listen to him because he's his commanding officer -- even though bright is inexperienced himself. there are in fact wars where the mature portrayal is that soldiers learn how to step in line. the one year war was like an entire year straight of d day.
