Elon sees that the days of readily accessible and cheap capital are over. Gone is the time of tech startups that bleed money getting hundreds of millions to billions in seed capital. Tech companies are going to have to generate consistent profit from here on out if they want to stay in business, and the $8 subscription is Elon's plan at making Twitter profitable. It's not his "sad attempt to make back some of the money he lost", it's going to be the standard going forward for a lot of these tech companies. I don't care much for Elon as a person, but people aren't putting much thought into this situation beyond some double-digit IQ level of analysis.
