There's a shit ton of glitches and shortcuts for you as an individual to do in online that take skill and can actively be done my human racers, especially for online play. There's tons of subtle mechanics such as chain wheelies, spindrifting, slipdrifting, etc. that can be used to make you differentiate yourself as a player.
As for colors, yeah, I get that, but it's not anything notable/game changing for me on emulation whenever I do emulate for my own fuckery, Wii looks really good when ran through a WiiU with its upscaler.
