Okay, so I was just listening to some John Mulaney standup, and he was talking about Law & Order, which I have never watched in my life and know absolutely nothing about. Turns out there was a character in that show named "Lennie Briscoe." So when I heard Mulaney say that name, it was like a holy shit moment as I suddenly realized, this is how Sonny came up with his name. He's a police detective, the name is almost exactly the same, apparently he was a particularly popular character in the show too, and Sonny clearly watches a lot of non-Japanese television and movies so it makes sense that he would know about this character. It's cool to learn about something like this by complete coincidence and suddenly connect the dots.
