I have no idea why 3 gets shilled as the Persona game with the best story and character development so often. Like, I went into it with really high expectations, and then was really severely disappointed by fundamentally everyone having the exact same arc. It’s all “someone they love dies” -> they mope from anywhere between a day and a week -> “No! [x] wouldn’t want this! I have to pick myself up and face the future for them!!”. It just gets so goddamn boring and repetitive for a while, especially with how unrealistic it feels as a response to genuine tragedy and how characters like Akihiko will have their entire arcs ostensibly revolve around the idea that training excessively won’t actually protect the people he loves, but then after he acknowledges that post-October 4, he just.. keeps doing the exact same shit, only with a new set of voicelines?? Nothing about him has actually changed but the game is just really fucking pretending it has for some reason! Add that to the pacing being abysmal and 3 just really feels like the worst out of the nusona trilogy in a lot of ways, to me. I acknowledge what people’s problems with 4 and 5 are but the character arcs your party members have in those games unironically feel much more grounded and varied and interesting than 3.
