Why are we still using PNGs (invented: 1996) if we want lossless images and/or transparency with its dumb scanline-by-scanline decompression algo that is so inherently serial that it's slow to load even on the fastest of computers? Why are we still using JPGs (invented: 1992) with its godawful ringing artefacts for everything else? This is literally tech from the last century. We might as be faxing our images to Hiroshimoot for posting.
Can we (4chan, browser vendors, society) just pick fucking WebP or AVIF or JPEG XL or whatever and move on? Each support all of that, have better compression, mature implementations, are faster to load and often even have hardware acceleration.
