The meteor that impacted Tallon IV was a Leviathan, an invasion/infection meteor that the living planet Phaaze sent to transform other planets into phazon planets. They're meant to impact, spread phazon to corrupt the planet, and select an organism from the planet to become the meteor's guardian, enhancing them with phazon. Tallon IV's meteor snagged a Metroid, creating Metroid Prime. In Metroid Prime 2, the planet Aether is hit by a meteor so hard that it splits off an extradismensional "echo" planet that's dark and twisted version of Aether, filled with goopy assimilating darkness monsters called Ing. You travel between the realities and kill the Ing meteor guardian. You also discover that Metroid Prime is now Dark Samus, who escaped Tallon IV and is harvesting phazon on other planets to grow stronger. The Space Pirates are SCARED SHITLESS that "oh no, there's TWO Samuses now".In Metroid Prime 3, Dark Samus has gained enough power to take over the Space Pirates and Phaaze itself and starts flinging Leviathans everywhere. You hop from planet to planet to kill the meteor guardians and stop the corruption. One of those planets is the Space Pirate homeworld, whose meteor has snagged, you guessed it, Ridley. Meanwhile throughout the game you slowly get corrupted by phazon yourself, because the whole situation is so bad that the Galactic Federation decides "fuck it, what if we do controlled phazon boosts with our own bounty hunter agents? Just a bit, what could go wrong?" It goes wrong, and you have to put down some teammates. Eventually you make it to Phaaze and blow up Dark Samus and all phazon for good.
