If the castle happens to be on/near a river flowing through the valley, it would be a good place to control the riverside land (which will probably be quite fertile) through ships, not to mention using said river and ships to transport food to the less fertile north too. The location might also be quite strategic depending on the exact terrain, as it could be a major road between /hlgg/-southern Candy Kingdom and the polar north.
