Here's my contribution; while watching the zombie game stream, I suddenly had the random thought about how used I am to almost every vtuber model having a default smiling expression at rest. Most of Silver's models tend to have pretty good mouth tracking, a side effect of this though is the fact that when she's focused on the game or something else, it tracks this by holding a more neutral expression too. It stood out to me all of a sudden because even though it is a purely instinctual response, 'default smile' as a resting pose really does have an impact on how you are feeling and perceiving the events of the proceedings in different lights, superstimuli hacking the primveal body language architecture humans use for mimesis - they look happy, so you feel happy, and the activities feel happy.
The 'default smile' convention, then, can be understood as a form of stylization, much like the virtual streamer conceit in general, where the form of certain ideals are pointed towards, notwithstanding exact details not always being exactly 100% representative of something else.
I would take this thought even further in declaiming that that is not necessarily a bad thing either.
It is good for a vtuber to have a good looking model, even if it is not fully 'realistic'; it is good for it to have engaging modes of expression, even if they are not 1-to-1 copies of whatever your present facial poses are - nor likewise is the converse necessarily good or desirable. Learning how manipulate your model theatrically is actually a skill in of itself.
It is hyperreality. The simulacrum is not something that is 'concealing' some deeper 'hidden' reality, it is something that is true in of itself, for its own sake.
