it's just that churches have their dirty little fingers way up certain governmental and societal institutions in some European countries, no one really likes that but there is not a lot political will to change it, despite religiosity itself playing a very little role in politics, especially compared to the US.
Germany still pays the churches hundreds of millions euro annually, because of some garbage 200 year old delegation.
Oh and they are the only ones who can legally discriminate by religion, not just by believe itself but also by being a church member.
Sounds reasonable until you realize that they can also do that with institutions for which they receive public funding to run, stuff like hospitals, kindergartens or retirement homes.
So if you wanna work as a doctor or nurse at certain hospitals you literally have to join the church (and pay curch tax) to qualify for employment.
They unironically have us by the balls.
