You can trace back a lot of stupid female fanbase practices from this, because it happened at the time LJ/DW sites were dying and Tumblr was rising. Harassing the creator of something you like, caring about ships being canon, mass reporting an artist you dislike, fiction morality obsession, applying real life social issues to fiction. Of course people like this have existed before the internet even existed, but you would never encounter them, it's like Tumblr and Homestuck concentrated it into a laser point.
What I found nice about vtuber fans is they felt insulated from this type of cancer even if there were english speaking female fan circles, but with the arrival of Luxiem that all changed of course.
