Though probably not the best thing Murakami's ever written, it's not that long and represents the creatively odd universes he sets his stories in pretty well, giving you a good taste for how he writes. He's certainly not for everyone, and if you like super in-depth lore expositions for the universe the author creates than you'll probably be mad at how little regard he has for the worlds he builds, using them as a backdrop for character stories rather than being the focus of the narrative. I absolutely adore 1Q84 and it's slow buildup of the characters, keeping you not even sure what the genre of the novel is for hundreds of pages, but I know a lot of people consider it a slog, so it's not a great introduction to his work. Hopefully it's something you can enjoy!
