she's not confident in her english skills, compound that with being in front of a bunch of senpai she really respects and her lack of confidence turned into "don't speak english it'll be embarrasing".
so she chose to speak japanese, which they all speak and she's more confident in. it wasn't a good decision and was absolutely akward but it wasn't a "sabotage".
