I don't know much about Mumei lore but Kaela for example got Kronii, Watame and Miko as her oshis but she didn't watch any of them before applying... oh and while we are at the topic Kaela is the best example to show you don't need to know anything before applying but she went thru a crash course while the other 3 are just lazy burger bitches.
There is also a fucking huge gap between being accepted and debut. Botan said Gen5 met 6 months before debut that's a lot of time someone can use to reasearch hololive.
