There's also the cultural differences between the west and Japan, the fact that we're in a post covid world, big corpos seemingly refusing to push the technology that forms the bedrock of their industry forward etc. The EN space is stagnating, but its a good thing. We need to lose some of the opportunists and dead weight. I'm not going to pretend I'm knowledgeable about the JP side of things to even comment on it.
