People were actually hyped about them early on, because most of the general audience likes the stars - they just couldn't get into them en-masse like the girls because of the language barrier + the JP stars not being charismatic enough to overcome it.
So people were hoping that the EN stars would be decently popular and were willing to give them a chance (pic related).
They even started off as underdogs thanks to the whole "design" issues, and the comparisons to iLuna designs - leading to /mag/ and that entire meme.
But once they strayed away from the JP stars path, their numbers + audience goodwill took a nosedive.
I stopped watching on principle.
