Also, since I dozed off after posting about American history last thread and someone asked for recommendations, the Oxford History of the United States is a good series to get an overview. For Jacksonianism, The Age of Jackson is a good read, though it’s definitely a product of the 1940s and anyone who knows anything about Schlesinger knows he’s biased towards the Democratic Party. Jefferson to Lincoln: the Rise of American Democracy by Sean Wilentz is a newer book that hits a lot of the same notes, while also taking into account stuff like the Trail of Tears. The Jackson chapter of Hofstadter’s The American Political Tradition and the Men Who Made It covers a lot of the rationale behind the Bank War as well.
