The wise god Enki, equivalent to Prometheus, came up with the idea of ending the feud between gods by creating a self-perpetuating slave race much weaker than them that they could have total power over to labor for them so that they don't have to work.
They created humans, and humans were forced to labor for the gods and build the world in their place. This worked great, but as mentioned, humans would keep reproducing and making more humans. This began to annoy some of the gods, especially the chief god Enlil, who believe that humans were too noisy.
Thus, Enlil, the god of storms and rain, vowed to destroy humanity for annoying him by being too numerous and producing a lot of noise.
Enki, who was not pleased about his creations getting nuked, found a single human, Utnapishtim, and his wife and warned him that Enlil was planning to destroy all of humanity, telling him to build an ark to avoid the flood that Enlil was planning to send.
Thus, Enlil flooded the world and killed all humans except Untapishtim and his wife.
Enki and Enlil came to an agreement afterwards, and Enki made it so that new generations of humans were much weaker, more susceptible to disease and stillbirth, and lived much shorter lives so that they wouldn't overpopulate the world and invoke the wrath of the gods. This is the humanity of today.
