The camera angles are purposefully there so you can see the props, items, and points of interest visibly laid out in plain detail, so you don't need to have pointed arrow marks or shining objects everywhere.
And while the movement in SH1 is rough and sluggish, in SH2 they give you the option for 2D controls so it's not that big a deal, as well as the option for adjustable puzzle difficulty. It's a lot more forgiving than something like the recent RE games, where they make all enemies into damage sponges and have headshots do jackshit to compensate for the better camera movement.
