The problems arise when it switches over into becoming an abusive system that encourages heavy competition between the community for rewards. Panko's, to be perfectly blunt, falls into this category by having a 1st place prize. Rie's did not because the major rewards were donation amounts which equates to a purchase, with small bonuses for the top 5 in a community with only three major whales.
Management should be aware of these differences and help craft the donothon setup around them on an individual community basis, but I know for a fact that they do not because of forbidden knowledge. It's sad, pathetic, and downright unethical how they've handled many things recently.
