It's heavy due to the amount of metal you need to cover the legs, movement limiting and due to the necessity for joints, weakest in the most vital areas. If you're favoring speed at all, it's better to go mostly without. You're more likely to get stabbed in the thigh because you were too slow in your metal armor than have it shield you from anything lethal. Chest/torso armor can protect from a lot of fatal blows and gauntlets can protect your arms (which by the nature of melee combat you're swinging into the path of the enemy's attacks), but leg armor is generally a lot less useful.
