To clarify, yes, I posit that I had a more constructivist view. I'm not convinced by your argument, I feel like it still folds changing factors into a supposedly static core concept.
But Comfy brought up the practical concern that in a fictional setting, you would always expect a character to keep "something" of themselves, no matter what transformations they might go through. This "something" is undefined and varying per-character, but it's always there, and effectively, I can observe this to be true in all fiction I can think of. While this is a bit intellectually unsatisfying, I can accept this as precedent for defining an unchanging core concept.
