At higher altitudes (where they'll get eventually, the rainforest turns into a cloud forest, where the water is kind of constantly condensing due to the humidity, temperature, pressure combo. That would probably be where they're most comfortable, as there's less sun and lots of water to provide cooling.

Basically the trail of high chuubanite concentration the beast leaves behind ends up mutating other creatures, killing most, but transforming some into monsters. Giant crabs, flying jelly fish, man-sized man-eating bats, lots of possibilities, I've populated Moriji like a Soulsborne dungeon.
And yes, Kamata kun is a big inspiration behind the Salamansho, though the salamansho has smaller eyes and more developed limbs, since it's an adult, not a juvenile. As well as being white.
