I'm currently writing a fic that needs to tell two stories. They're about the same character and world but just occur at different times. One is the story of the past (flashback) and one is the story of the present (main story), and I need the thread's thoughts on how to structure my narrative because I can't decide between two options.
The first way is how I'm doing it right now, where the flashback has been broken into several segments and will appear in different intervals throughout the telling of the main story whenever there's a lull, a quiet moment or a good stopping point. Basically the flow/structure of the story will go:
>Main story -> flashback -> main story -> flashback -> main story
to slowly build up the overall image of both stories at once.
The second way is what I'm also considering, where the flashback and main story don't interrupt each other and exist in separate documents, which is a lot more simple, like so:
>(All of) flashback -> (all of) main story
which could potentially be better to avoid breaking the flow of the story.
I hope this is making sense. What do you guys think would work best?
