Even once you narrow it down to Fibromyalgia (which is usually achieved by process of elimination since the condition is very poorly understood) they basically have to just try random stuff like physio, nerve studies, diet changes and an array of different meds to see if they have any effect. But a lot of doctors avoid meds for fibromyalgia because the best treatment options are usually opiate painkillers or antidepressants, both of which have their associated stigmas and side effects. Maybe in a couple decades we'll understand the condition better, but at this point we're at the "I dunno, throw some leeches on that wound" level of understanding.
