>>77512469in regards to it only coming from those two things, it's not exclusive to maple, you can also get a thin sugar sap from birch that you can reduce into a syrup. sugary fruit juice reductions like apple or grape should probably also count because they're natural and very flavorful, and of course historically people tended to use grain starch converted into sugars since this is also dark and tasty.
if you don't count these, you can't count maple either since it's actually watery and low in sugar until being reduced, same as the rest. but yes, there are a lot of options and people consistently choose the absolute worst tasting and least nutritious.
