Quoted By:
From a nightmare, I wake up.
Head groggy, pills in hand, and vision distorted.
I open the blinds, make some coffee, and lay in bed.
It's been a while since they died,
They lost everything; their greed denied.
They thirsted for wealth, hoarded riches,
Grew a successful business,
Only for all of it to diminish.
Into the air, it vanished.
Into the void, they were banished.
Taking a stroll into the trading building
I expect something, anything;
A hint of their presence, a trace of their essence.
Alas, nothing is present.
The only thing I can do is think back and regret.
I head to the trading floor disappointed.
Comparing trades with my brethren,
Laughing, joking, and bantering,
This is the usual scene.
Everything is the same,
Yet I feel the blame.
They will forever be gone,
Their story is done.
I wasn't able to make them stay,
There was nothing I could say.
At night-time I head into the marketplace;
It is a rowdy place, and I can hear cheers and praise.
The dividends were bountiful, my wallet once more full.
Excitedly, I beckon for them.
Yelling their name,
The words scarcely leave my throat.
Upon my own words, I choke.
My voice slowly fades with each syllable,
Leaving me quite miserable.
Everywhere I focus,
I am reminded of when they were here,
And before I am even able to notice,
I grow a grin spanning ear to ear.
The chatter around me begins to fade,
A scene starts to play in my mind.
It's back when we used to talk trade.
With a feast laid out every adjustment,
Like kings in our own castles, we dined.
Oh, how I missed the old times,
Those times when we used to make pretty dimes.
I'd suggest a good deal, and they would give another.
I would order, and they would deliver.
They were the seller, and I was the buyer.
Over the weather we would chatter,
Over the smallest things we would banter.
In trading we were ruthless,
We wouldn't just go for the kill,
We'd go for the murder.
The more time we spent together,
The more I wished that time would slow down and falter,
The more I wished that we could stay together forever.
Alas, no matter how much I long for their return,
time will march and my wish will burn.
My greed will never be sated,
even if for an eternity I waited
