They are a smaller black and white bird here in Australia, the live primarily on bugs but will sometimes eat tadpoles and the like from the water's edge and will also have a go at carrion. They are like mini magpies, including having interesting songs, swooping to defend their nests if they feel threatened and all that shit. Basically, imagine a magpie the size of a pigeon. It was probably chasing the turtle because they are very curious birds and the turtle is fucking odd to him (that mudlark is a bloke).

It DID escape right into a rosemary bush that I then had to fish him out of to get him back to the water (adorable thing was borderline retarded, ignored the nice rock formation to climb down and instead ran straight into a bush and got stuck) but he got to the water just fine in the end.
The same mudlark ate some bugs from my garden later, so it isn't like he went home hungry.
