plants are fairly simple, to grow they need three things - energy, nutrients and water
earth happens to have lots and lots of nutrients and water
energy is even easier because we happen to have a fuckmassive fusion reactor bathe us in free energy from sky to our service
so plants just take that stuff and convert it to living bits and additional storage bits when they have enough living bits already built up - and luckily, those living/storage bits tend to be edible/usable for us
