I unironically dislike most chuuba designs because it feels like half of them are just copying the same handful of design tropes (how many fucking catgirls are there?) and a good bit of the remainder are trying to be deliberately quirky and weird by either picking a quirky subject (like a bear or something) or getting an artist with a strange artstyle in motion, like Pikamee. Filter out the ones that just look shit like Ironmouse and only a few have designs I really like.

Ollie is a real highlight as >>10886081 pointed out, she's probably in my top 3 alongside Gwelu Os Gar and Ina.

How to make a vtuber: by hololive
1) Take concept 1, something chuuni or overpowered for shonenfags
2) Take concept 2, something popular or trendy (like Genshin or rrat meme)
3) Mix them together, make hair at least two-toned
4) Add mandatory asymmetry
5) Add details
6) End up with surprisingly good base
7) Add more details
8) Wait nigga stop, what are you doing
9) MORE DETAILS, MORE ASYMMETRY
10) Optional: hire worst rigger possible (see Irys, Mumei)
11) Its done!
12) Try to hire talent afterwards, try to match their personality with model's personality. Force it if you need to.

I still stand my point in Holos not having generic designs though. For the earlier gens, maybe, but lately it just keeps getting more interesting and complicated, for better or worse.
For instance, gen 3 and gen 4. I'd not call those designs uncreative, at least personally.

Earlier designs were great.
Gen 3 is especially solid. Rushia is top tier, tasteful symmetry and not too crazy.
Not a fan of everything later except for maybe Watame and Botan.

I remember reading the Haruhi novels back in the day and there was this scene where Kyon sees some clothes that he describes as perfectly modest yet pure sex. I liked the idea, and I thought that that kind of design is probably possible, but I'd consider myself lucky if I saw one such outfit actually come to life before I die. And Suisei isn't quite that either – there's that 100% necessary thigh strap whose only purpose is to titillate – but it really comes close to that particular ideal.

I'd like to mention Guras design. I like to judge art based on how well it achieved what it set out to achieve. By this metric, I think Guras model is incredibly well designed. You see Gura and INSTANTLY know what she is. She's a cute shark girl. The fact that shark girls are rare in anime causes many newcomers that see her to be pleasantly surprised by the idea, and the very next thought in their head is how well she pulls it off. This I believe is purely due to her design, and I believe her design is a large (obviously not entirely) part of why she gained popularity so fast; She's a cool concept that was executed well.

This design is a perfect example. You can't tell at all that Artemis is meant to be a shark (unless you're told beforehand), compared to Gura where it is super obvious as soon as you see her.
