In order to decide if they want to make new games in a series, Capcom was infamous in the late 2000s to the late 2010s for the "Capcom Test."
What they would do is release a game in the series that was unrelated, like a cheap spin-off, or a remaster of an old game (usually with glaring issues of some kind.) If the game sold a FUCKTON of copies, the series got to live. If they didn't sell a fuckton, the game died.
For instance, Devil May Cry 4 was the best-selling game in the Devil May Cry series. But it didn't sell well ENOUGH, despite crushing it and making money that any company would call a success. Because of that, DMC was canned for a decade and replaced with DmC.
Mega Man also died for a decade because of this, with Legends 3 being cancelled because a different spin-off got very little interest. I think they even cited a European account poll that had low engagement as a reason for killing Mega Man for a decade.
This just kept happening. RE2 Remake only happened because people realized they were doing another Capcom Test with RE Zero and RE1 Remake, and they were ready to fucking riot if it failed for some reason.
