Sports games are built on a model that forces producers to cut every fucking corner as humanly possible because as new players need to be added into the game it becomes more and more expensive to produce because they have to buy rights to use the likenesses of these people inside their game.

On this case, 2k20 was develop by another studio with little experience. Yukes (the main developer of te 2K and some old WWE games, also EDF series) wanted to do another wrestling game by itself and 2K didn't want any of that shit so they cut them.
I don't know about others sports games, but WWE is really fucking hard to work with, because they need to watch and aprove every single thing on the game, including the camera cuts at the wrestler entrance. I have read how fucking hard was to add HHH entrance because WWE (or rather Haitch himself) wanted to make it as realistic as possible and that takes times and resources that are limited. Overall, at least on the WWE games, they uses a lot of clones or the same characters on different eras because is more easy than making one new character, so that's why they sell the NXT guys as DLC or the really niche wrestlers only hardcore fans know about it.

Do people even care about the actual licensed wrestlers, though? I'll admit my exposure to the 2K games is pretty limited, but most of what I see people care about is the CAW quality and general game quality. Not as many seem to care if they can recreate Hogan VS Andre or have Cena fight the Undertaker.

Performance wise? Yeah I expect it to be more stable on release day than the trashfire that was 2k20.
Content wise? Nah. Is going to be the same as always, but now with less people to choose thanks to Big Releases Khan (Not to be confused with Tony Khan, the owner of AEW, is just anther exec with the Khan surname but also the president of WWE). People think Khan is preparing everything to sell WWE to Disney, ABC or Viacom.

They are doing the new AEW wrestling game with the director of Here Comes the Pain but the models are lackluster for now. I expect them to release it by 2023. Could be good but who knows at this point.

For the hardcore audience, yes. Some wrestlers are really popular in the mainstream, like the Rock or Steve Austin, which are the people 2K and WWE usually gets to do a big special mode for that year's game or something like that. The CAW are most for people who want more out of the game but I don't think is the main appeal of the game.

yes. the intial bonus streams (6.5, 6.9, 6.91, etc) were a timeline split, but as of Future Imperfect, the timeline has reformed.
BONUS episodes tend to focus on sillier stuff and match requests.

I've always found it funny that Marine seems to be the only babyface amongst Sankisei. Noefure are heels because they're pro-management (but that may change after their beating at the hands of Yagoo and A-chan), Rushia's entrance makes her come off as a heel and Pekora seems to be a tweener.
