As for what your old uni prof said, it's true for the most part.
Future employment can go two ways:

There is no policy for it, but the professor will usually allow them to do it because they don't give a fuck either.
Of course, there are the students that really want to learn and on top of joining clubs/circles, they join seminars and labs, and they get tons of attention from their professors who are just elated that someone is showing genuine interest, but those are the minority.
