My experience and the stereotype is that the inverse is not true, i.e. spanish people don't really understand / try to bother speaking other languages, portuguese included. I'd say for portuguese people understanding spanish is almost as easy as for british people to understand american english.
Italian feels further away and I can still pick up on a lot of stuff, but not enough to feel comfortable. French is somewhere inbetween italian and spanish I guess. There's also the idea that portuguese (european, not brazilian which is simpler) as a language is so fucked and convoluted that portuguese people have an easier time learning other languages because they're simpler.
