In that time you basically learn how to conjugate verbs and some basic vocab, and that's it. They won't really fail you if you learn nothing, since french isn't important enough to hold someone back a grade. Typically french teachers don't actually even speak french themselves, and being a french teacher has a bit of a reputation for being the absolute bottom of the barrel. My french teacher in grade 5 assaulted a 10 year old and got fired, and french for that year turned into study hour with a substitute from pakistan that didn't speak english, let alone french. Technically, french teachers are subject to the same standards as everyone else, but in reality so few people want to work as french teachers that they basically take anyone willing to do the work and just fudge the numbers. Falsified criminal records are not uncommon.
