The anime scene post-Madoka took inspiration from Madoka, and fine-tuned it's ideas, implementing them later on. But the original was surprising because it wasn't done often, and when it was, it never reached success to that level before.
It's like going back to read Romeo and Juliet and calling it schlocky drivel. Maybe NOW it's cliche and it's twists have no bite, but that's only because it was a foundational work, and everything after took from it. What was unique then is trite now.
Madoka in 2011 is a very different experience from Madoka in 2021. It's similar to how western comedic shows all took inspiration from Seinfeld in how to construct their humor, or how most mecha shows took inspiration from Evangelion by making the stories about the characters instead of just big robots fighting each other, or how most Toku shows took inspiration from the original Devilman TV series when it came to the drama and the idea of a transforming hero.
