It was pleasant, but you have a very limited number of routes available, so if you're going anywhere other than a major city, you'll still have to arrange a decent drive. It's also much slower than flying, and a lot of the time you can even drive cross country faster than you could travel by rail.
Basically the interstate, and passenger jets made rail less attractive, and then with the degradation of infrastructure, unprofitable to invest in.
