>be a newly retired man
>worked hard in your factory all your life
>kept your wive happy, your kids well raised, did things right
>but that was years and years ago
>your wife passed away years back, and the kids are happy, but grown up, and far away now
>you sit in the park, wondering what's left for you now
>not sad enough to be suicidal, not happy enough to be content, just stuck in a melancholic stupor
>the squirrels run by and play while you sit back and reminise about the times gone by, hoping God can give you a sign
>suddenly, you feel a tap on the shoulder
>look behind you
>a young woman is looking at you, a few nuts in her hand, arm outstretched and offering them to you
>confused, you ask "d-do you want me to eat those, ma'am?"
>she mumbles out "f-for the squirrels, right?"
>you take a bit to understand her, but finally get what she means and take them from her
>you give the squirrels their food while the girl watches, then walks away
>you didn't understand why that girl showed up, or why she seemed so hard-pressed to talk
>but you did notice how nice it felt to give a helping hand to the critters
>"Maybe that was the sign I was looking for," you think to yourself
>start looking for a pet to adopt the next day, something to take care of, and be taken care by, until the end
