You can also set an alarm clock to go off in the middle of your sleep schedule (I won't do this if you need the sleep. I did this when I was a bored college student). In general, I guess being a skeptical person and questioning everything helps (without being a true schizo). My brain constantly questions itself if something is real. Within the dreams, I'll try to check the time of a clock or watch or my phone. If I can't read it, I immediately snap to consciousness and realize it's a dream.
Keep in mind, you may experience fucked up sleep paralysis practicing lucid dreaming. I used to wake up without my body being able to move and my brain tells me there's something creepy in the corner of my eye.
