Taken to the very extreme in Japan you have sokushinbutsu, where you literally abstain from all desires including the desire for food, water, and, well, life, so that you reach buddhism while 'alive'. This would have the end goal of mummifying yourself as a corpse impervious to decay. If you do it wrong and did not adequately purge yourself of desire, your body would not mummify itself properly and when they exhume you to check, you would be declared to not have reached sokushinbutsu. To date, a hundred or so monks have tried and only 24 have been declared to have succeeded.
