They will self-insert in these fantasies and gain a likeness to it because they feel like they're in control of the situation, unlike what happened to them
Example: A woman happens to be a rape victim but she could not stop thinking about it or even may feel like she enjoyed it, so she starts having rape fantasies in her own mind that she can always turn off if she ever feels uncomfortable
Of course, not all victims are the same and for some it might be painful, but if it doesn't cause any harm to the victim (unlike cutting oneself, for example) it's not a bad coping mechanism
